New Alternatives in PVC Tape Coating: UV and Hot-Melt Adhesives

Against the backdrop of increasingly stringent environmental requirements and continuously improving production efficiency demands, traditional solvent-based coating processes are facing challenges. UV-curable adhesive and hot-melt adhesive coating technologies are gradually expanding their applications in PVC tape production due to their environmentally friendly and efficient characteristics.


Both technologies eliminate the need for traditional drying oven systems, reducing energy consumption, minimizing environmental pollution, and simultaneously enhancing production efficiency.


01. Characteristics of UV-curable Adhesive Coating Technology

UV-curable adhesive coating technology utilizes ultraviolet curing principles, offering significant advantages in the PVC tape coating process.


The core of this technology lies in the precise coordination between the comma刮刀 coating unit and the UV curing unit. The comma刮刀 is made of high-strength, high-hardness materials with minimal edge straightness errors, ensuring uniform coating thickness and extremely precise control.


The edge of the comma刮刀 is often made of high-speed steel material, possessing high hardness, wear resistance, and heat resistance. Even when facing abrasive particles such as aluminum oxide in the coating, it significantly reduces wear and maintains long-term stable coating effects.


The UV curing unit typically includes a large cooling roller and surface curing lamp sets. The large cooling roller can promptly cool the coated PVC film, effectively preventing surface deformation and wrinkling due to high temperatures, ensuring stable product quality.


02. Advantages of Hot-Melt Adhesive Coating Technology

Hot-melt adhesive coating technology is another drying-oven-free coating solution particularly suitable for PVC tape production.


Hot-melt adhesives are solid at room temperature, containing no solvents or water. At specific temperatures, they melt into liquid adhesives, and after being applied to the substrate surface, they cool and rapidly solidify.


This coating process does not require drying equipment, resulting in low energy consumption and no pollution. Hot-melt adhesives are 100% solid components, producing no volatile organic compounds during the production process, and operators are not exposed to harmful substances when cleaning residual adhesive.


Hot-melt adhesive coating offers fast curing, low public hazard, and strong adhesion. The adhesive layer has a certain degree of flexibility, hardness, and toughness. After cooling and solidifying, the adhesive layer can be reheated and melted, possessing some re-adhesiveness.


03. Key Technical Requirements for Equipment

Whether for UV-curable or hot-melt adhesive coating equipment, a series of technical requirements must be met to ensure product quality.


A precise temperature control system is crucial. For hot-melt adhesive coating, the temperature control system must employ accurate PID control, with errors within ±1°C, to ensure the hot-melt adhesive is in the optimal working state.


An automated control system is standard in modern coating equipment. A PLC touchscreen fully automatic centralized control system can achieve a one-person operational modern production mode, improving production efficiency while reducing labor costs.


Tension control and deviation correction devices are also essential. Unwinding and rewinding should adopt a fully automatic constant tension control system to ensure neat and uniform material winding, guaranteeing consistent product quality.


04. Application Fields and Selection Recommendations

UV-curable and hot-melt adhesive coating technologies are widely used in the production of various PVC tape products.


Hot-melt adhesive coating equipment is suitable for producing self-adhesive products such as self-adhesive labels, double-sided tapes, foam tapes, cloth-based tapes, and various other adhesive tape products.


When selecting equipment, parameters such as coating width, coating weight range, and production speed need to be considered. Common coating widths range from 400-2500mm, coating weights can reach 10-200g/m², and production speeds can be up to 80m/min.


For R&D and small-scale production, small-scale experimental coating equipment can be considered. This type of equipment has a small footprint, and its working principles are similar to large production equipment, making it more suitable for experimental and sampling needs.


With increasingly strict environmental regulations, UV-curable and hot-melt adhesive coating technologies are becoming important development directions in PVC tape production due to their drying-oven-free, energy-saving, and environmentally friendly characteristics.


In the future, with advancements in materials science and control technology, these two coating technologies will develop towards higher precision, higher efficiency, and greater intelligence, bringing new opportunities to the PVC tape industry.
