The Building Waterproofing Materials Industry

Building waterproofing materials are classified as functional materials within the broader category of building materials. The primary purpose of using waterproofing materials in buildings is to prevent dampness, seepage and leaks, with particular emphasis on leak prevention. Buildings generally consist of a shell formed by the roof, walls and foundations, all of which are critical areas for building waterproofing. Waterproofing aims to prevent water ingress through cracks in various parts of the building caused by various factors, or through joints between structural components. Any material used in buildings or structures to fulfil the functions of moisture resistance, seepage prevention and leak prevention is referred to as a building waterproofing material.

The upstream raw materials for the building waterproofing materials industry are primarily petrochemical products, including bitumen, membranes (including barrier membranes), polyester reinforcing fabrics, SBS modifiers, polyethers, emulsions, base oils, paraffin wax and isocyanates. The industry is significantly influenced by the international crude oil market and domestic supply-side reforms. The primary downstream clients of the building waterproofing materials industry are the property and infrastructure sectors. These materials are widely used in residential construction, high-speed railways, motorways and urban roads and bridges, underground railways and urban rail transit, airports, underground utility tunnels, underground spaces and water conservancy facilities.

Building waterproofing materials are essential functional building materials in modern construction, primarily used in property development and infrastructure construction. Their development trends are closely linked to the broader economic environment. Since the launch of the reform and opening-up policy, China's national economy has maintained a momentum of rapid development. In recent years, although the growth rate of China's GDP has slowed somewhat, it has continued to grow at a relatively high rate, whilst the quality of economic development has also steadily improved. The sustained high growth of China's national economy has provided ample room for development in sectors such as real estate development and infrastructure construction; simultaneously, driven by the continuous development of downstream application sectors, the future prospects for the building waterproofing materials industry are favourable. 1. The shift of building waterproofing materials towards green and environmentally friendly solutions. Currently, China's building waterproofing materials industry remains characterised by outdated, overcapacity production and high levels of pollution from manufacturing emissions. However, in recent years, a series of environmental policies relevant to the sector have been introduced, effectively driving the industry towards a green and environmentally friendly direction characterised by high technology, high quality, low energy consumption and low pollution. 2. The rise of photovoltaic (PV) roofing is driving increased demand for polymer waterproofing membranes. Polymer membranes offer outstanding properties such as corrosion resistance, resistance to ageing and a long service life, meeting the warranty periods stipulated under the new national standards; they represent the mainstream direction for the future development of waterproofing membranes globally. In photovoltaic (PV) roofing, the service life of the roof waterproofing must match that of the PV system. This has opened up new application scenarios for polymer waterproofing membranes, which possess superior durability. In the future, with the vigorous promotion of PV roofing, the demand for polymer waterproofing membranes is set to expand further.
