Coating GSM (grams per square meter) is the most widely used unit for the amount of adhesive solids applied, representing the mass of dry adhesive per unit area. It is the primary specification for tapes, labels, and other coated products. Typical GSM ranges: removable notes (5-10 gsm), general-purpose labels (15-25 gsm), masking tapes (20-30 gsm), double-sided tapes (40-80 gsm), and silicone release coatings (0.5-2 gsm). GSM is measured online by beta or X-ray gauges (subtracting substrate weight) or offline by gravimetric analysis. For hot melt adhesives (100% solids), wet GSM equals dry GSM. For solvent/water-based, dry GSM = wet GSM × solids fraction. Control is via closed-loop pump speed adjustment based on gauge feedback. Uniformity across the web is critical; profile control corrects local variations. Reducing GSM saves material cost, but must not compromise performance. GSM is a key metric for cost calculation, quality assurance, and process capability. Regular calibration with gravimetric samples is essential. The trend is to lower GSM through formulation improvements and better process control.
