Coating width is the dimension of the coated area measured across the transverse direction of the substrate web. It is a fundamental specification that determines the usable product width and material utilization. Coating width is set by the effective width of the coating head (die lip length, gravure cylinder pattern, or roll face length) and is typically 5-15 mm less than the total web width to allow for edge trim. Standard widths range from 300 mm for specialty products to over 2000 mm for high-volume packaging and labels. Width control is achieved through edge dams, air knives, or shims. Edge effects such as edge beads require trimming. Coating width directly impacts productivity and capital cost; wider lines produce more output but require larger rolls and ovens. Modern lines have automated width adjustment and vision systems for monitoring. Tolerances are typically ±1-2 mm for most products, and ±0.5 mm for precision applications.
