Dry coat weight is the mass of adhesive solids deposited per unit area after all volatiles (solvents, water) have been removed, expressed in grams per square meter (gsm). It is the most critical specification for adhesive products, directly determining performance and material cost. Typical dry coat weights: 5-15 gsm for removable adhesives, 15-30 gsm for general-purpose PSAs, 30-50 gsm for double-sided tapes, and 0.5-2 gsm for silicone release coatings. Measurement is done gravimetrically (offline) or by online beta/X-ray gauges with substrate weight subtraction. The relationship between wet and dry coat weight depends on solids fraction: dry gsm = wet gsm × solids weight fraction. Factors affecting dry coat weight include adhesive solids content, pump flow rate, line speed, and substrate porosity. Control is via closed-loop flow adjustment with gauge feedback. Reducing dry coat weight saves material but must maintain adhesion performance. Regular calibration and solids content verification are essential for accurate control. Dry coat weight is the basis for cost calculation and product specification.
