Line speed, expressed in meters per minute (m/min), is the velocity at which the substrate travels through the coating machine. It is a primary throughput parameter, with hot melt PSA lines typically running at 200-600 m/min, solvent-based at 50-200 m/min, and water-based at 50-200 m/min. Line speed directly affects coat weight: for a given flow rate, higher speed reduces coat weight. Therefore, speed must be precisely controlled (within ±0.1%) and synchronized with pump flow to maintain constant GSM. Higher speeds improve productivity but require faster drying/cooling and increase the risk of air entrainment and web stability issues. The mechanical design (rolls, drives, ovens) must support the maximum speed. Speed changes during acceleration/deceleration must be compensated by flow adjustments to avoid coat weight deviations. Modern lines use servo drives with rapid dynamic response and feed-forward control. Drying oven length is often the limiting factor for speed in solvent/water-based lines. Line speed is a key factor in line cost and overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).
