Viscosity range refers to the acceptable spectrum of adhesive viscosity values that can be processed on a given coating machine or with a specific coating method, typically measured in centipoise (cP). Slot die coating handles 100-50,000 cP, with optimal 500-5,000 cP. Comma blade coaters handle 100-50,000 cP. Roll coaters handle 50-50,000 cP. Gravure coating is best for 50-2,000 cP. Spray coating is limited to below 500 cP. Hot melt adhesives are applied at elevated temperatures where viscosity drops to 500-5,000 cP. Viscosity is highly temperature-dependent; a 5°C change can alter viscosity by 10-20%, affecting coat weight. Precise temperature control (±0.5°C) is essential for hot melts. Non-Newtonian (shear-thinning) behavior must be characterized at process shear rates. Viscosity is measured by rotational viscometers or inline sensors. The viscosity range influences pump selection, coating head design, and line speed. Operating outside the range causes defects: low viscosity causes dripping, high viscosity causes streaks and poor leveling. Formulation and temperature must keep viscosity within the optimum window for the chosen method.
